CNN’s Harry Enten Has A Big Zero For Pete Hegseth Amid Boat Strike Scandal

Harry Enten on Tuesday revealed that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hasn’t had a positive net favorability in any poll in the last year.

“Zero, zero, zero, zero, zero!” CNN’s chief data analyst said.

Enten emphasized that Hegseth has never “been a popular guy,” pointing to a poll from last year that found the plurality of Americans said the Senate shouldn’t confirm the former Fox News host.

Hegseth and the Trump administration have faced growing backlash following a report in The Washington Post that said the defense secretary gave a directive to “kill everybody” on an alleged drug smuggling boat back in September. When two men survived the initial strike, U.S. Navy Admiral Frank Bradley followed Hegseth’s command and ordered a second attack on the boat that left no survivors.

CNN’s John Berman asked Enten if Hegseth’s negative net favorability meant Americans had no interest in him. Enten said Hegseth sparked far more interest than recent defense secretaries. According to data from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research, at least 10 polls had focused on his popularity.

“This is extremely unusual for a defense secretary to be generating this much interest, especially when we’re not at a time of war,” said Enten. He added that there hadn’t been such polling interest in a defense secretary since Robert Gates held the post from George W. Bush’s second term into Barack Obama’s first term.

Enten also highlighted how Hegseth’s chance of being the first to leave Trump’s Cabinet had jumped from 18% on Friday (when The Washington Post released its report on the Sept. 2 strikes) to 35% on Tuesday, according to the prediction market Kalshi.
