The Ministry of Education has extended the closure of all schools in the Northern Division for an additional day as communities continue to recover from the heavy rainfall and flash flooding that swept through the region earlier this week.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro confirmed that schools in Vanua Levu and Taveuni will remain closed tomorrow, Thursday, 27 November 2025, to give families more time to clear debris, repair damaged property, and restore access to homes and roads.
Schools are expected to reopen on Friday, 28 November, depending on weather conditions and safety assessments.
The latest Situation Report from the Ministry’s Emergency Operations Centre indicates that while weather conditions have improved, the aftermath of flooding remains a challenge for several communities.
According to the update:
- Floodwaters are gradually receding across Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
- Power, water supply, and traffic have returned to normal in most areas.
- Several roads and crossings remain damaged or inaccessible.
- Soil erosion and blocked drainage continue to pose safety hazards.
The Ministry’s Disaster Risk Reduction team recommended the extended closure to ensure students and teachers can return to school safely. Heads of Schools have also been reminded that, under the School Operating Procedures, they may independently assess local conditions on Friday and take necessary action, provided the Ministry is informed.
Meanwhile, schools across Viti Levu will remain open on Thursday. However, the Ministry has urged parents and guardians to exercise caution and make decisions based on weather conditions in their area. Heads of Schools on the main island have also been advised to assess their immediate environment and prioritise safety when determining whether classes should proceed.
The Ministry will continue to coordinate with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) and the Divisional Emergency Operations Centre, and will issue further updates should weather conditions change.
Minister Radrodro reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding students and teachers during adverse weather events.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students, teachers, and school communities remain our top priority,” he said.
