Jair Bolsonaro arrested and placed in detention after being sentenced to 27 years

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was placed in temporary detention on Saturday, a few months after being sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted coup, his lawyer and a source close to the case said.

“He has been taken prisoner, but I don’t know why,” said Celso Vilardi, one of his lawyers, to AFP. The federal police stated in a press release that they executed a temporary detention warrant following a decision by the Supreme Court. Jair Bolsonaro, 70 years old, had been under house arrest since August and was at risk of being incarcerated in the coming days.

In September, the Brazilian justice system found him guilty of leading a “criminal organization” aimed at maintaining his power in an authoritarian manner after his left-wing rival, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, won the October 2022 elections. The Supreme Court formally rejected the former president’s appeal against his conviction last week. In response to this decision, Bolsonaro’s defense had requested on Friday the possibility of serving his sentence at home, citing health issues. The request was not accepted, leading to his temporary detention.
