Antimony exploration near Pezinok faces resistance over toxic metal risks

A Canadian exploration company, Military Metals Corp, has begun geological drilling near Pezinská Baba in western Slovakia through its subsidiary, Slovak Antimony Corporation, in search of antimony deposits. The town of Pezinok, on whose territory the drilling area lies, opposes the project. Mayor Roman Máca (Independent) said the activity poses a serious threat to the environment, drinking water and residents’ health, since antimony is a toxic heavy metal that can seep into soil and groundwater if not properly contained. The town also criticised the Environment Ministry for not cancelling the exploration area when the company missed the legal deadline to start geological work.
