According to the provincial People’s Committee Office, the upgrade project, funded by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) with a total investment of nearly VND1 trillion (US$38 million), is among key infrastructure works to be inaugurated in celebration of the 14th National Party Congress.

The project includes the repair of the runway and taxiway system, expansion of the aircraft apron, and renovation of the domestic terminal.

Work on the project began on July 1, when the airport temporarily suspended all operations.

After more than three months of continuous work, the investor ACV and contractors have mobilized additional equipment and staff to accelerate progress.

All components are expected to be completed before December 19, ensuring readiness for reopening and the upcoming inauguration ceremony.

During the closure, passengers traveling to Nghe An have been using nearby Tho Xuan Airport in Thanh Hoa Province or Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Tri Province.

In mid-February, the Ministry of Transport, now reorganized as the Ministry of Construction, approved the master plan for Vinh International Airport for the 2021-30 period, with a vision to 2050.

Under the plan, the facility will serve both civilian and military purposes and be upgraded to 4E standards.

By 2030, Vinh Airport is projected to handle up to eight million passengers and 25,000 metric tons of cargo annually, increasing to 14 million passengers and 35,000 metric tons of cargo by 2050.
