The Grand Duchy has secured a seat on Unesco’s executive council.
The council nominates Unesco’s director general, sets and supervises its annual work programme and budget, and organises its annual summit and thematic conferences.
Luxembourg won a four-year term, that will run until 2029, after receiving 165 votes in the European regional group, the foreign ministry said on Friday.
Norway, with 164 votes, and Turkey, with 162 votes, were also selected during a summit in Uzbekistan.
Xavier Bettel, the foreign minister (DP), lobbied heavily for the seat. His ministry said Luxembourg’s priorities would include multilingualism and multiculturalism, along with information and communication.
Luxembourg bids to join Unesco board for second time
Luxembourg first served on the UN’s education, science and culture body from 2005 to 2009.
