Zambia has reaffirmed its support to advancing the objectives of the Sevilla Commitment through enhanced domestic resource mobilisation to finance social development and promote inclusive growth.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, emphasized Zambia’s determination to implement comprehensive reforms that strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation and support social protection programmes.
He spoke during a side event themed “Boosting Domestic Public Resources to Finance Social Development: Harnessing the Momentum of the Sevilla Commitment” at the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar.
Haimbe highlighted that the momentum generated by the Sevilla Commitment offers a crucial opportunity to accelerate global efforts toward achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.
He urged stakeholders to view social protection not as a cost, but as an investment in a shared and prosperous future.
“Mobilising domestic resources is critical not only for driving future economic growth but also for achieving immediate and tangible improvements in the welfare of citizens,” he said.
The Minister outlined key reforms undertaken by the government to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, including automation of revenue collection systems to improve efficiency, simplification of the tax system to broaden the tax base, strengthening taxpayer education initiatives, and intensifying measures to curb tax evasion and combat illicit financial flows.
“Every unit of currency lost to illicit financial activities represents a missed opportunity to invest in vital development programmes, particularly in social protection,” Haimbe said.
He reiterated Zambia’s steadfast commitment to working closely with international partners to advance a fair, inclusive, and sustainable global development agenda that leaves no one behind.
