Two sealed boxes of returned ballot envelopes discovered in Maricopa County

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ — Maricopa County officials say they found two boxes of returned green affidavit envelopes during an inspection, according to a Friday announcement.

The discovery occurred when election workers inspected equipment from voting locations across the county.

Green affidavit envelopes are expected to be counted at the close of election night.

The elections department says 2,288 green affidavit envelopes were found. They are being signature-verified on Friday morning, and those with a good signature will be processed for tabulation.

They will be included in the results post we have planned for Friday afternoon.

The boxes were secure with their tamper-evident seals, according to officials, but poll workers had mistakenly placed the envelopes in a return box instead of returning them on election night.

After the discovery, a bipartisan team of election officials took the boxes to ensure the proper chain of custody was followed.

Maricopa County says the envelopes will be signature-verified and processed.
