Sierra Leone engages Camden Mayor in community outreach visit

 AYV News, November 6, 2025

As part of their continuing community outreach drive, H.E. Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh and staff of the Sierra Leone High Commission (SLHC) has paid a courtesy visit to Cllr Eddie Hanson, the Mayor of Camden, at the Camden Civic Building in central London.

The visit provided an opportunity for renewed dialogue, strengthened relations, and mutual inspiration between the Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission and the head of one of the UK’s most diverse and vibrant boroughs. The Mayor, who originally hails from Sierra Leone, took the Mission delegation on a guided tour of the civic building, from the main council chamber to halls dedicated to the registration of births, marriages, and other civic functions, using the tour to explain the daily workings of local governance in Camden.

Cllr Hanson, whose life journey from Sierra Leonean refugee to the first Mayor of Camden of Black African descent continues to inspire many, shared moving reflections on his personal story of determination and service. He expressed one touching regret, saying, “My father, my greatest source of inspiration, did not live to see me ascend to this important seat. Everything I do is in honour of his belief in me.”

In his remarks, H.E. Dr. Morie Manyeh praised the Mayor’s remarkable journey and dedication to public service, describing him as “a living testament to Sierra Leone’s enduring spirit of resilience and excellence.” He added, “Cllr Hanson’s story embodies the power of perseverance and the strength of our shared values as honest and hardworking Sierra Leoneans, wherever we find ourselves.”

Mrs. Yvonne King Odigboh, Deputy High Commissioner, expressed admiration for the Mayor’s commitment to community empowerment, noting that “his story will continue to inspire generations to believe that humble beginnings can lead to solid impact when guided by purpose and integrity.”

The visit underscored the High Commission’s enduring commitment to strengthening ties within the Sierra Leonean diaspora and fostering partnerships that promote unity, service, and progress across communities in the United Kingdom.
