Tripura explores overseas jobs for skilled workers in Germany, Middle East

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday said that the state government was in touch with Germany and Middle East countries for the employment of skilled workforce from here.

According to him, Japan has already started hiring from Tripura.

“Under the specified skilled workers scheme, we have already sent six persons to Japan under a very good placement contract. Another batch of four individuals is ready to depart soon. Apart from that, a total of 60 people are being imparted professional training on the Japanese language so that they can adapt easily over there,” the Chief Minister told a toolkit distribution programme for resettled Bru migrants in Tripura.

He further said that the state government was also in touch with German and Middle Eastern nations for a similar kind of agreement for the placement of skilled workers.

“We are in touch with Germany and Middle East countries. We are looking forward to sending our skilled workers to these countries after proper career counselling. We are laying more emphasis on the medical and technical sector,” said Saha.

Describing skill development as a key to sustainable income generation, Saha said, “When Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Bru settlements of Tripura, he instructed us to ensure that the resettled Brus must get skill-based training so that they can earn on their own. Based on his suggestions, we undertook the skill development drives and today I am immensely happy with the outcome of the training programmes designed and implemented by the Skill Development Department.”

Slamming the rival political parties for ignoring the humanitarian crisis that the Brus had endured for 23 long years, Saha said, “The previous government did nothing for the Brus rather than shedding crocodile tears. No other political party other than the BJP did anything for the Brus. With the initiative of the BJP government, the crisis was finally resolved through the quadripartite agreement signed at New Delhi. Initially, a package of Rs 600 crore was sanctioned for the resettled Bru migrants but ultimately that package touched the Rs 800 crore mark till the final phase of implementation.”

According to Saha, for the skill development training of the Brus under different trades including goatery, dairy, piggery, carpeting, computer hardware and networking, etc., a budget worth Rs 8 crore had been sanctioned.

“In the first phase, 2,989 people were imparted skill training while in the second phase over 4,000 people got trained. It is a matter of satisfaction that 445 of the trained manpower had been placed in different agencies. More than 200 people got driving licenses,” said Saha.

For procuring toolkits for the trained workforce, more than rupees one crore had been spent.
