Janet Berube Douglass

OTISFIELD – Janet Berube Douglass, 88, of Otisfield (formerly of Andover, Massachusetts), passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., to the late William C. Berube and Marie Aldia Bellmore.

A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Janet began her journey at Sacred Heart High School and Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing before earning her BSN from St. Anselm College, her MNSC from Boston College, and her Doctorate in Nursing Science from Boston University. Her commitment to nursing was more than a career – it was a calling.

Over the years, Janet worked in the ER and taught at the School of Nursing for Lawrence General Hospital. She also served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and went on to share her expertise with countless students at Boston College, Boston University, UMass Amherst and Lowell, Harvard School of Public Health, Husson College, and St. Joseph College of Maine. Many remember her as an inspiring teacher who nurtured not only skill but also compassion in her students.

During the summers of the 1970s, Janet could often be found at Camp Lawrence – the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s boys’ camp – caring for campers as the camp nurse. Her kindness and humor made her a favorite among the children and staff alike.

Outside of her professional life, Janet was a woman of many talents and passions. She loved her years as a Girl Scout leader, sharing her enthusiasm for nature and discovery. She found great joy and solace in her kitchen and garden. She and her husband, Alan, shared a spirit of adventure that took them around the world, collecting memories and friendships wherever they went. But above all, Janet’s happiest moments were those spent with her family, she cherished them deeply.

Janet leaves behind her devoted husband, Alan B. Douglass of Otisfield; her daughter, Sara E. Wormald and husband Jeff of Hampstead, N.H.; her son, Alexander B. Douglass and partner Jodi Nicolo of Derry, N.H.; her grandchildren, Ryan E. Anderson (and husband Jon), Corey J. Wormald (and partner Dani Bottiger), and Janette M. Douglass; and her great-grandchildren, Leah and Noah Anderson. She is also survived by her brother William E. Berube and his wife Claire of Moreland, Ga.; nieces Ellen Douglass and Laurie Douglass Paul; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and great/great-great nieces and nephews.

Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering strength will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at a later date with her family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dementia Society of America, the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or any organization that holds special meaning to you.
