Cannabis plantation discovered near Luxembourg

Police in neighbouring Germany discovered a commercial cannabis plantation with around 700 plants in Wawern in the Trier-Saarburg district at the end of October.

The village is only about five kilometres from the border with Luxembourg, near Grevenmacher.

The Trierischer Volksfreund newspaper reported on Wednesday that investigators searched a residential building in the centre of the village on 25 October 2025 and found several hundred cannabis plants in various stages of growth.

A 41-year-old suspect was arrested and is now in custody.

According to a witness, the house in which the plantation was operated is located in the centre of the village and had been considered suspicious by residents for some time. The man is said to have lived there quietly and had little contact with the neighbourhood.

The police in Trier has told the Luxemburger Wort that no official statement on the operation has been published as investigations into possible accomplices are still ongoing.

As reported in the Volksfreund article, a neighbour from Wawern had contacted the newspaper due to the increased police presence over the past few days.
