Latvian State Police gave details on November 4th of a drugs bust they made back in the summer.
On August 1th3 of this year, officials of the Rēzekne Regional Department of the Criminal Police Bureau of the Latgale Regional Administration of the State Police initiated criminal proceedings in connection with the illegal circulation of excisable goods and the storage of narcotic substances in Ozolaine parish of Rēzekne region, and launched raids a day later.
Approximately 100 kilogrammes of narcotic substances and 382,460 cigarettes with and without excise stamps of Belarus were seized during the criminal proceedings. Then on August 15th, while continuing the investigation, law enforcement officers discovered a specially constructed underground cache in the forest. The cache contained nine bags, which in turn contained 83 packages with “a greenish-brown, plant-based, hashish-like substance”. The total weight of the packages found was approximately 100 kilograms.
It took until October 30th for the investigation to be completed and transferred to the prosecutor’s office for the initiation of criminal prosecution.
The State Police initiated criminal proceedings for the illegal manufacture, storage, transfer or sale of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, and for the unauthorized manufacture, acquisition, storage, transport or transfer of narcotic or psychotropic substances. A man born in 1975, who remains unnamed, is the chief suspect and faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
