Lesotho Red Cross Celebrates Care Facilitators Ahead of Red Cross Day

As Lesotho prepares to mark Red Cross Day on 9 November, special tribute is being paid to the dedicated Care Facilitators in Kena and nearby villages. These volunteers are the heart of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Project, which has served local communities for more than ten years. Their continued dedication has transformed countless lives through compassionate service, practical assistance, and emotional support for children and families facing hardship.

The Care Facilitators’ role extends far beyond basic care. They provide vital household support, guidance to guardians, and ensure children have access to health services, education, and emotional stability. Their work has been instrumental in strengthening family resilience and promoting community-based care for vulnerable children. The Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) has acknowledged their ongoing commitment as an essential part of its humanitarian mission to improve lives at the grassroots level.

Last week, the Care Facilitators participated in a Capacity Building Training on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and First Aid. The training equipped them with advanced skills to manage stress, respond to trauma, and deliver emergency assistance safely and effectively. These sessions are part of LRCS’s broader effort to enhance service delivery and ensure that care is both empathetic and professional. The training also reinforces the organization’s goal of integrating mental health and wellbeing into all aspects of community care.

The OVC Project remains one of the Lesotho Red Cross’s longest-running community programmes. By empowering Care Facilitators through continuous training and support, LRCS ensures that vulnerable children receive the dignity, safety, and care they deserve. As the nation celebrates Lesotho Red Cross Day, these community heroes stand as a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and volunteerism in building stronger, more caring communities.
