SSPDF releases seven SPLA-IO officers and supporters in Unity State

BENTIU – At least four officers of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) and three supporters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) who were detained last week have been released.

According to SPLA-IO Sector Two spokesperson Yai Pazale, the group was released over the weekend in Rubkona County of Unity State following the resolution of differences between the SPLA-IO and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).

Speaking to Sudans Post, Pazale said the seven individuals were detained by SSPDF commander Lt. Gen. Matthew Puljang Jang without clear reasons.

“Yes, they were released yesterday and are now back at our SPLA-IO base in Tong cantonment area,” Pazale confirmed. “Such incidents have occurred in different parts of Unity State, but this is the first time we’ve recorded such a case in Rubkona. We condemn the arrest of our officers that took place last Wednesday.”

He added that one of the detained officers was a major, while the rest were of lower ranks, noting that none of them were tortured during detention.

Meanwhile, Unity State Minister of Information, Engineer Gatwech Bipal, also confirmed the release, stating that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between the two forces.

“I am aware of the release of two SPLA-IO officers who were detained due to a misunderstanding between the SPLA-IO and SSPDF. The issue has been resolved by the state leadership,” Bipal said.

He added that the officers were held for three days before being released peacefully, assuring that calm had returned to the state.

“Unity State remains peaceful as before,” he said, warning against misinformation on social media. “My message to the youth of Unity State is to share accurate information with the public instead of spreading false news.”

The four officers were identified as Thai Gattiek Ziaydoar, Maj. Gen. Puok Ngueny Koh, Maj. Gen. Kew Kuol Riek, and Guong Kew.
