A 60-year-old cyclist died instantly after colliding with a car whilst cycling in Limassol on Monday afternoon.
Gunter Kohrgruber was returning from a cycling route near Plataniskia with a group of cyclists when the fatal collision occurred around 1:10pm on Monday (03/11) in the Limassol district.
The group of cyclists, who live in Paphos, travelled to Limassol with their bicycles in a van to cycle in the Plataniskia and Pissouri area, according to information obtained by Philenews.
Limassol traffic police chief Marios Charalambous said the 32-year-old driver was driving his saloon car on the Pissouri to Plataniskia road when he collided with the 60-year-old cyclist, who was travelling in the opposite direction, at a point shortly after the motorway under circumstances being investigated.
The victim was cycling with a group of three other cyclists who were riding slightly ahead of the 60-year-old during their return journey, according to information obtained by Philenews.
The 60-year-old entered the opposite lane of traffic. The victim’s friends searched for him at some point and found their friend dead at the side of the road.
The car driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, whilst the cyclist was wearing a protective helmet.
Police cordoned off the scene, where examinations were carried out by members of Limassol traffic police and the Police Headquarters Traffic Collision Reconstruction Branch.
Police are expected to assess statements from the cycling group and CCTV footage from the area where the fatal collision occurred.
