US ambassador to present credentials next week

The new US ambassador to Luxembourg Stacey Feinberg has arrived in the country, the embassy has confirmed, and is due to present her credentials to Grand Duke Guillaume next week.

The US Senate ratified Feinberg’s nomination by President Donald Trump last month during a single voting session in which appointments to 107 different offices were made.

The embassy last week said on social media its team was “proud to welcome” the ambassador and “looking forward to working under her leadership to deepen the ties between the United States and Luxembourg.”

Feinberg’s appointment came as US media reports suggested the embassy in Luxembourg could close under State Department budget cuts.

During her confirmation hearing in the summer, the businesswoman and Trump donor stoked controversy for saying she “humbly would like to educate” Luxembourg about China and encouraged the Luxembourg government to “reexamine” its relationship with Beijing.

Business lobby groups have said they are eager to meet with the new US ambassador, with the post vacant since Feinberg’s predecessor and Joe Biden appointee Thomas Barrett left in January after Trump took office.

Feinberg will officially assume her post with the presentation of her letters of credence to Grand Duke Guillaume. The date has been set for 13 November, US embassy Luxembourg spokesperson Megan Johnson confirmed to the Luxembourg Times.

While it might feel drawn out, Feinberg’s appointment has come comparatively quickly. Trump’s last ambassador to Luxembourg – Randy Evans – took 18 months to arrive in the country after Trump first took office, handing in his credentials in mid-June 2018.

Feinberg is a businesswoman and advocate for female business leaders as a board member of the Women Founders’ Network. She studied at Northwestern University and started her career at her father’s sports and entertainment law firm. Her father was the lawyer and sports agent Bob Woolf, who died in 1993.
