The women in blue lifted their maiden World cup trophy on November 2. Team India played its first Women’s World Cup in 1978. Since then, the team had not won a single ICC trophy until November 1, 2025. On Sunday, a 47-year drought ended. India won its first ODI World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final by 52 runs.
Shafali Verma became the first batter to score a fifty in the final at the DY Patil Stadium. Deepti was named Player of the Tournament. She also became India’s highest wicket-taker in a single tournament. Smriti Mandhana scored the most runs for India in a single edition of the World Cup.
Shafali and Deepti scored superb half-centuries
The Indian women’s team, batting first in the final against South Africa, scored 298 runs. The opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma put on a 104-run partnership for the first wicket, laying the foundation for a big score. Shafali scored 87 runs from 78 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Deepti Sharma also scored 58 runs. Finally, Richa Ghosh scored 34 runs from 24 balls, including three fours and two sixes. These players were instrumental in the team’s successful total.

Later, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma displayed their brilliance with the ball. South Africa’s formidable batsmen couldn’t stand up to Deepti. South African captain Laura Wolvaardt did score a century and scored 101 runs, but the rest of the team failed to deliver. The entire African team was bowled out for 246 runs. Deepti took five wickets in the match. Besides her, Shafali conceded just 36 runs in seven overs and took two wickets. For her excellent performance, she was awarded the Player of the Match award. Deepti, on the other hand, received the Player of the Tournament award.
