Rapper Namewee charged with drug possession and use, pleads not guilty | Malaysia

LOCAL rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, has been charged with drug possession and use, police confirmed today.

City police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 41-year-old artist was arrested at a hotel on the evening of 22 October, where police allegedly found nine pills suspected to be ecstasy.

Wee, who was remanded for two days, later tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.

“On 24 October, he was charged under Sections 39A(1) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for possession and use of drugs,” Fadil said.

Section 39A(1) pertains to drug possession and carries a maximum five-year prison sentence and up to nine strokes of the rotan upon conviction. Section 15(1)(a) relates to drug use, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of RM5,000, or both.

Fadil said Wee pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on bail with one surety for each charge. Bail was set at RM4,000 per charge, and the case has been fixed for mention on 18 December.

Wee has publicly denied allegations linking him to drug use or possession, particularly in connection with the recent death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh.

In an Instagram post, Wee said he was confident that “the truth will emerge” once police investigations conclude within two to three months. – November 3, 2025
