The Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government (Malta), in collaboration with the Breeds of Origin Conservancy (BOC), has launched a national project to protect Malta’s heritage livestock breeds and restore traditional rural landscapes especially focusing on the Maltese goat as a symbol of the country’s living cultural heritage.
The project, based at Tas-Serċ in Delimara, will establish a national site for research, regeneration, and conservation focused on Malta’s traditional livestock breeds, particularly the Maltese goat, alongside native plants and local olive varieties.
Blending scientific research with rewilding principles, the initiative seeks to revive traditional grazing practices and restore Malta’s rural landscapes. These efforts recognise that heritage livestock and pastoral traditions are vital expressions of Maltese identity, shaped over centuries of coexistence between people, animals, and the land.
Minister for Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said the project “ensures that Malta’s heritage breeds and rural traditions are preserved as living cultural treasures.”
Through conservation grazing, habitat restoration, and cultural revival, the initiative aims to reconnect communities with their environment, create opportunities in research and eco-tourism, and secure the future of Malta’s endangered breeds as symbols of the nation’s enduring heritage.
