“Misophonia” is an innovative audiovisual, mixed-media project that immerses audiences in the unsettling world of sound sensitivity. Combining traditional 2D animation with risograph printing, it marks the first exhibition of its kind in Malta and is among the very few risograph short films worldwide.
The project takes its name from misophonia, a neurobehavioral condition where everyday sounds—like chewing, breathing or sniffling—can trigger intense discomfort, anger, or the urge to escape. While most people barely notice these noises, those with misophonia experience a heightened emotional and sensory response.
Rather than following a conventional narrative with a beginning, middle and end, “Misophonia” prioritises the emotional and sensory journey of someone living with the condition. The soundscape drives the story, allowing audiences to experience the same overwhelming sensations and fight-or-flight responses felt daily by those affected.
The project is led by Michelle Gruppetta as Director and Creative Lead, with animation support from Violeta Fellay, who also serves as Project Coordinator, and Yasmin Kuymizakis, the Sound Designer. “Misophonia” is supported by Arts Council Malta, sponsored by TvPaint, and forms part of the Spazju Kreattiv 2025 Programme.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind the work, Gruppetta shares:
“Eight years ago, I moved from Malta to Denmark, from one of the noisiest countries in Europe to one of the quietest. Suddenly, I had removed myself from a hidden daily pressure I hadn’t realised was overwhelming me. Towards the end of my time there, I was diagnosed with ADHD, which explained my sensitivity to flavors, textures, and especially sounds.
A year ago, Gruppetta moved back to Malta which meant confronting relentless noise again—from construction, traffic, phones, planes, fireworks, dogs and more.
“ ‘Misophonia’ is my scream against that tide, a way to make people aware of the everyday challenges some of us face, and perhaps inspire a bit more consideration for others,” wrote Gruppetta in a statement.
Through “Misophonia”, Gruppetta hopes viewers will either feel seen or reflect on the unintentional impact we have on one another, and how small changes could make the world a more comfortable place.
The exhibition is available for viewing between 27th November and 11th January at the Lejn l-Atriju, St James Cavalier in Valletta.
