upra National Express national shipping company files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

The nationwide truck driver shortage has claimed another shipping company.

California-based Supra National Express filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 28, according to The Street.

The report stated 17 trucking companies have filed for bankruptcy in the second quarter of 2025 alone.

In Alabama, Montgomery Transport filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy Oct. 11 and left about 1,000 employees out of work.

Supra’s website said the company was founded in 2009 and has become “one of the West Coast’s leading port-essential, asset-based transportation companies, focused on efficient and tech-enabled movement of cargo via first-rate carrier services and proven processes.”

There were 3.58 million truck drivers employed in 2024, according to the American Trucking Association. That’s a 0.8% decrease from 2023.

Long-haul trucking demand dropped 25% in the six months of 2025, The Street reported.

Trucks transported more than 11 billion tons of freight in 2024, according to the association. There were about just under 15 million single-unit trucks registered in 2023, which represents 5% of all motor vehicle registrations.
