'Speechless': Portsmouth school counselor surprised with national award

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) — Kyle Spaltholtz, a 7th and 8th grade counselor at Portsmouth Middle School, became the district’s first-ever Milken Educator Award recipient on Thursday.

But heading into the gym that morning, he had no idea it was coming.

Students and staff gathered for what was billed as an assembly about the school’s positive learning environment. Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green was running the event when suddenly she shifted gears and brought out a “special guest.”

Milken Educator Awards Vice President Dr. Jane Foley was given the microphone to announce she had a surprise for one exceptional educator.

Teachers are not made aware of their candidacy, so Spaltholz was completely shocked to hear his named called before he walked up to accept his award and the $25,000 prize that comes with it.

“I’ve been working in a lot of different schools doing lot of different roles and I’m just so thankful for everyone here and for the recognition today, so thank you so much,” Spaltholz told the crowd.

Known as “the Oscars of teaching,” the Milken Awards recognize educators nationwide who stand out and make a difference in their students’ lives. Spaltholz is the only recipient in Rhode Island this year.

“I had no idea. They did a very good job at hiding this whole thing from me,” he told 12 News after the ceremony. “I’m just so proud of this school … and just so happy I got a chance to share this moment with everybody.”

Spaltholz said he’s been working at the school for more than 11 years.

“Every day, I make sure that those kids know that they are wonderful and that they’re safe and respected here, and that they’re ready to learn just like our expectations are here at Portsmouth Middle School,” he added.

Foley and Infante-Green praised Spaltholz for his innovative approach and the welcoming environment he’s built.

“Kyle Spaltholz’s boundless leadership, resourcefulness, and genuine passion for supporting others elevates everything else he does,” Dr. Foley said in a press release. “Whether he is teaching, coaching, or counseling, Portsmouth’s students are fortunate to have his guidance as they transition to high school.”

“Over his tenure at Portsmouth Middle School, Kyle has earned the trust of both his students and his colleagues because of his solution-oriented, student-first approach,” Infante-Green added. “He represents the very best of Rhode Island educators. I’m grateful for his dedication and know that he will continue to have a positive impact as a Milken Educator.”
