Tonga to mark 150 years of its Constitution with week of events

The kingdom will observe the sesquicentennial of its constitution with a five-day national celebration.

The Office of the Prime Minister of Tonga has announced that Tonga will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Constitution of Tonga (first adopted 4 November 1875) with a week-long program of events from 31 October to 4 November 2025.

Key ceremonies begin with a Royal Prayer Breakfast and the commissioning of the Queen Sālote International Wharf & Port Upgrade Project on 31 October, while 4 November will be marked by cultural parades, the float parade down Taufaʻahau Road and a groundbreaking for the new Legislative Assembly building.

In a statement at the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister ʻAisake Eke said: “Constitution Day is a profound reminder of our sovereignty, unity, and enduring independence.”

The government also declared additional public holidays to accommodate the celebrations and reinforce national pride.

Observers note that the milestone comes at a time when Tonga is also emphasising climate resilience, regional cooperation and diaspora engagement, linking the symbolic anniversary to broader governance and development goals.

With events ranging from athletics and cultural shows to speeches and international engagement, the sesquicentennial is poised to be a high-profile moment for Tonga’s constitutional heritage and future direction.
