President meets Pope Leo XIV, invites Holy Father to visit Pacific

President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu met His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, during his official visit to the Holy See.

The Fiji Government said the meeting was “filled with warmth and goodwill,” marking a moment of deep spiritual and moral significance for Fiji and its people.

President Lalabalavu conveyed greetings from the Government and people of Fiji and presented a personal letter inviting the Holy Father to visit Fiji and the Pacific region “at the earliest opportunity.”

In their discussions, the two leaders reflected on shared concerns about global challenges, including climate change, peace, and social wellbeing.

President Lalabalavu reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to a “Drug-Free and Peaceful Pacific,” describing it as “a moral duty grounded in faith and human dignity.”

The statement said Pope Leo XIV commended Fiji’s leadership and “acknowledged the moral courage of small island nations confronting climate and social challenges.”

“The care of creation and the care of humanity are one and the same mission,” His Holiness said, extending his blessings to the people of Fiji and the Pacific.
