Panama Canal and Florida International University Sign Cooperation Agreement

The Panama Canal and Florida International University (FIU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in key areas of mutual interest, including global trade, logistics, sustainability, water management, and public policy.

The delegation visited the Miraflores Locks to learn firsthand about the operation of the interoceanic waterway.

The event, held at the Panama Canal Administration Building, was attended by the Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jose Ramón Icaza Clement, who participated as the guest of honor, as well as by the Panama Canal Administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, and FIU President, Jeanette M. Núñez.

During the ceremony, Jana Allen, representing the Vice Presidency for Labor Relations of the Panama Canal, highlighted the importance of this academic agreement and the shared commitment of both institutions to education, innovation, and public service.

Administrator Vásquez emphasized that education and research are fundamental pillars of sustainable development, noting that the agreement reflects the Canal’s ongoing commitment to promoting learning, knowledge, and academic collaboration with leading international institutions.

President Núñez highlighted the importance of building partnerships that strengthen research, innovation, and the exchange of experiences to prepare future generations and contribute to the region’s development.

This agreement establishes a framework for academic and research collaboration, as well as the exchange of knowledge and expertise between the two organizations. It also reinforces the Panama Canal’s efforts to promote talent development, research, and professional training in strategic areas.

Through this partnership, the Panama Canal reaffirms its commitment to fostering alliances that promote innovation and knowledge as key drivers of sustainable development in Panama and around the world.
