N3 Toll Route closed after deadly crash kills 8

The N3 Toll Route is currently closed following a deadly crash that claimed the lives of at least eight people. Several others have been injured in the accident, which occurred near Swinburne in the Free State.

The collision involved a minibus taxi and a truck. The South African Police Service and emergency services are on the scene.

ROAD CLOSURES FOLLOWING ACCIDENT

According to Free State Chairperson of the Road Incident Management System, Sipho Towa, several lanes have been closed, including the left lane for southbound traffic and the right lane for northbound traffic.

Arrive Alive (AA) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching the crash site, remain alert to emergency and traffic management personnel, and follow all road signs and instructions.

“Road users are warned to expect congestion and delays between Van Reenen and Swinburne for the duration of the cleanup and recovery operations. Please approach the area with caution,” said the AA.

SAFETY TIPS FOR RAINY WEATHER

With numerous areas across the country experiencing inclement weather, the AA has also reminded motorists to drive carefully on wet roads and to observe the following safety tips:

  • Maintain a safe following distance.
  • Reduce speed on wet surfaces.
  • Avoid sudden braking.
  • Watch out for oil patches.
  • Keep both hands on the steering wheel.
  • Switch on headlights for visibility.
  • Be mindful of vehicles behind you and in blind spots.
  • Take extra care during the first half hour after rain begins.

“We would also like to emphasise the importance of vehicle fitness when driving in heavy rain. Drivers should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they are able to respond swiftly to any emergency situations,” the AA added.
