Lincoln’s Muchachos opens up free food pantry amid government shutdown, SNAP cuts

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Lincoln restaurant is stepping up to help people impacted by the government shutdown.

Muchachos, located near 11th and L streets, is opening the “Muchachos Lil Pantry,” the restaurant announced in a social media post on Wednesday.

The restaurant said its merch shelf will now be used for bread, canned goods and non-perishable items.

“Take what you need,” Muchachos wrote. “If you can, please bring some items with you to fill our ‘pantry.’ If you do, there’s a free street taco in it for you!”

Muchachos is also offering “SNAPADILLAS,” a free quesadilla with either pork or chicken that also comes with a soda.

“No payment needed. No judgment. Just happy and full bellies,” the restaurant said.

The restaurant’s two new initiatives begin “immediately.”

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services paused SNAP benefits in November due to the government shutdown.

Nebraskans who need assistance are encouraged to contact 211, a statewide resource and referral hotline.
