The aim is to support and acknowledge the altruistic commitment of these families, who will now be eligible for benefit as soon as they take children or young people into their care.
According to the council, “from this year onwards, the measure will also include foster families at the moment they receive children or young people in their care – a form of support, encouragement and recognition of their selfless gesture”.
Created in 2016, the “Vale + Natalidade” programme seeks to encourage birth rates, support families, and stimulate local trade. It has seen strong adoption since its launch, as in 2024 alone, support reached 66 children from São Brás de Alportel, with results described as “very positive”, and 40 vouchers have already been issued in 2025.
The value of the benefit remains at €150 per child, unchanged since 2023, “in response to the growing difficulties faced by families”. Each household received three €50 vouchers, which can be spent in local shops on essential goods and services for children’s development – such as healthcare and hygiene products, furniture, prescribed medicines, childcare items, clothing or footwear.
Families eligible for the programme include those with newborns, registered as residents of the municipality, those adopting children up to the age of 12, and, from this year, foster families.
“Vale + Natalidade” is part of the broader “vale + Municipal Family Support Plan, which also includes “Vale + Educação” (for purchasing school materials), “Vale + Saúde” (providing vision screenings for children), and the “+Família” training initiative addressing family life challenges.
Interested families should visit the Support Office at the Town Hall (Rua Gago Coutinho, no. 1) with proof of residence and the child’s registration. Vouchers can be collected until the end of the year.
