Greek Australians honour Oxi Day as Oakleigh prepares for a weekend of festivities

The Greek community of Australia commemorated the national anniversary of October 28, 1940, paying tribute to Greece’s historic “Oxi” and to all who fought for freedom and dignity.

Across Melbourne, a series of memorial events, church services, parades and school ceremonies were held in recent days, bringing together students, families, educators, community organisations and dignitaries from across the Greek-Australian diaspora.

At Oakleigh Grammar, students marked the occasion with a commemorative assembly and presentations honouring the courage and sacrifice of the Greek people during the Second World War.

Meanwhile, attention now turns to the weekend as Oakleigh, Melbourne’s vibrant Greek hub, prepares to host the much-anticipated Oakleigh Glendi Festival, celebrating ten years since its inaugural event.

The Glendi will take place at Warrawee Park on Saturday 1 November (12 pm–10 pm) and Sunday 2 November (12 pm–7 pm), featuring a lively program that promises an authentic taste of Greek culture — from traditional music and dancing to food stalls, children’s activities and community exhibits.

A highlight of this year’s event will be the performance of Greek singer Christina Salti, travelling from Greece to energise festival-goers with her signature sound and stage presence.
