Mitur and UN Tourism advance validation of DR’s national sustainable tourism policy

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and UN Tourism have concluded the third technical mission of their cooperation project aimed at developing and implementing the Dominican Republic’s National Sustainable Tourism Policy and Strategy.

The primary objective of this mission was to present and validate the draft of the National Sustainable Tourism Strategy and Policy, gather feedback from key stakeholders, strengthen institutional capabilities, and establish the groundwork for effective national and territorial implementation.

Over the twelve-day period, the mission conducted bilateral meetings, sectoral workshops, thematic roundtables, training sessions, and high-level meetings with authorities, business leaders, and organizations linked to the country’s tourism sector.

A highlight of the mission was the public presentation of the project and its progress, which took place during the event recognizing Minister David Collado as Minister of the Americas by UN Tourism. The ceremony featured tourism ministers from across the region and sector representatives who participated in a discussion on tourism sustainability in the Americas.

The mission saw the participation of UN Tourism’s executive director, Natalia Bayona; the regional director for the Americas, Gustavo Santos; the director of international development and cooperation, Jaime Mayaki; and the director of innovation, education, and investments, Antonio López de Ávila, alongside the national and international technical teams from both UN Tourism and Mitur.

With this third mission, the Dominican Republic reaffirms its regional leadership in sustainable tourism and its commitment to a model based on competitiveness, inclusion, and climate resilience. The strategy is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

The official presentation of the National Sustainable Tourism Strategy and Policy is scheduled for the project’s fourth mission, which is set to take place in December 2025.

The comprehensive agenda included participation from representatives of the public, private, academic, and community sectors.
