Latvians feel they need EUR 2000/month for financial stability / Article

Almost half or 45% of the Latvian population would be financially secure if their monthly income after taxes reached at least EUR 2,000, according to a survey conducted by the research agency Norstat and the bank Citadele.

The results show that 24% would feel financially secure with a salary of EUR 2001-2500, and another 21% – with EUR 2501-3000 after taxes. Only 4% of respondents said that up to €1500 would be enough, while 14% believe that more than €4000 per month is needed to be financially secure.

Analysing the data by gender, women are more likely than men to associate financial security with a relatively lower salary – 25% of women said that €1501-2000 would be enough, compared to 18% of men.

Men, on the other hand, are more likely to choose higher income categories – 18% believe that financial security requires more than €4000 (compared to 10% of women).

The survey also reveals significant differences between age groups. Young adults (18-29 years) were more likely to say that an income of €2001-2500 would provide security (28%). Older people (60-74 years) also indicated that an income of €1501-2000 per month would be sufficient (30%).

The middle-aged group (40-59 years), on the other hand, is much more demanding, with around a quarter of this group saying that financial security would require more than €3000 per month.

Those living in Rīga have the highest financial requirements – almost a fifth, or 18%, say they need more than €4,000 a month for security, and another 46% say they need an income between €2,001 and €3,000. This trend is explained by the higher cost of living in the capital – higher housing, transport and everyday expenses.

However, one third or 33% of Kurzeme residents said that a salary between €1501 and €2000 would be enough for financial security. In Zemgale and Latgale, the financial security bar is the lowest – up to 28% of Zemgale and 25% of Latgale residents believe that an income of up to €2,000 would be enough. Vidzeme is in the middle in this context. The region’s population as a whole has moderate expectations – 22% say that a salary of €2,001-2,500 would be enough for security, while only 12% believe that more than €4,000 per month is needed.

The population survey was conducted by Citadele together with the research agency Norstat in September 2025, with more than 1,000 Latvians aged 18-74 surveyed online.
