With India’s transformation from a mere consumer to a major creator of technology products, the world is looking up to the nation not just for affordability, but also its innovative edge, Magesh Ethirajan, Director-General, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), said in Tiruchi on Saturday.

Mr. Ethirajan was delivering the convocation address at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRM IST)- Tiruchi on Saturday.

Mr. Ethirajan said: “India’s journey in science and tech has been extraordinary. From launching the Aryabhatta satellite in 1975 to building the Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan missions, developing indigenous supercomputers and micro-processers, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced materials, we have come a long way. Each of these milestones is a reflection of the belief that India can design, develop, and deliver world-class projects on its own soil.”

India had progressively reduced its reliance on imported technology and goods but more could be done to promote indigenous industries, he said. “Somehow, India lost the semiconductor race in 1991 when liberalisation happened and cheap products were dumped on this country. Research in these areas was on the backseat. Graduates could look into these areas, and see we can get into newer materials,” said Mr. Ethirajan.

A total of 684 students received their degrees at the institution’s second graduation ceremony.

R. Shiva Kumar, chairman, SRM Group of Institutions, Ramapuram and Tiruchi campuses, presided over the function. R. Jagadeesh Kannan, dean-faculty of Engineering and Technology, presented the annual report.
