CEDAR CITY — A California man pleaded guilty this week to attempting to rape a teenage girl while in a motor home parked in a Cedar City parking lot.
Luis Lopez, 32, was charged in January in 5th District Court with rape, object rape and forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies; possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, a third-degree felony; providing alcohol to a minor, a class A misdemeanor; and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class B misdemeanor.
On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of attempted rape, a first-degree felony. In exchange, the other charges were dismissed.
In January, a 14-year-old girl had run away from a group home in Parowan and met Lopez at the Walmart in Cedar City, where she asked if she could use his phone. “She then told him that she was 14, to which he responded with, ‘Oh, you’re just a baby,'” according to a police booking affidavit.
Lopez then invited the girl to stay with him in his motor home and while she was there, he provided her alcohol, THC wax and a vape, police said. The girl reported that Lopez had sexual intercourse with her despite her saying “no” and trying to push him away, the affidavit states.
Police said Lopez had ties to California as his driver’s license and license plate were both from California, despite him living in Cedar City at the time.
In a plea statement, Lopez admitted he had sex with the girl without her consent. “For purposes of the plea agreement, this is being called an attempt,” his plea statement says.
Lopez is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 13. The crime of attempted rape carries a minimum sentence of three years to life in prison, according to court documents.
