PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Dozens gathered Thursday morning at Remembrance Park to honor the fallen Marines commonly known as the Rhode Island IX.
The Rhode Island IX were killed in a bombing attack in Beirut, Lebanon, while on a peace-keeping mission on Oct. 23, 1983.
It remains the single deadliest day for the U.S. Marine Corps since D-Day at Iwo Jima in 1945, and the deadliest day for Rhode Island service members since the Civil War.
The memorial, located on Dyer Street, was erected and dedicated in September 2020. It features the Marines’ faces etched into glass and illuminated by both sunlight and electric light.
The names of the fallen are:
- Sgt. Timothy Giblin of North Providence
- Lance Cpl. Thomas Julian of Portsmouth
- Cpl. James Silvia of Middletown
- Cpl. Stephen Spencer of Portsmouth
- Cpl. David Massa of Warren
- Cpl. Edward Soares Jr. of Tiverton
- Cpl. Rick Crudale of West Warwick
- Cpl. Edward Iacovino Jr. of Warwick
- Cpl. Thomas Shipp of Woonsocket
