Fentanyl discovered after attempted traffic stop in Bristol

Two people were arrested in Bristol and allegedly found with more than 1,700 bags of suspected fentanyl after police said the driver attempted to flee a traffic stop, leading to officers deploying stop sticks and a foot chase.

Officers attempted to conduct the stop in the afternoon hours on Riverside Avenue, according to the Bristol Police Department.

While the driver was eluding officers, police claimed that the occupants threw a book bag out of the window. As the vehicle was forced to stop after it was disabled by stop sticks, two people took off on foot, police said.

According to police, multiple residents contacted authorities and reported seeing the pair take off. They were apprehended “almost instantly” following a brief foot pursuit, police said.

The suspects were identified as Tyrek Middleton, 29, and Nigeria Minchenko, 27, both of Waterbury.

Officers recovered the bag that had been ditched and allegedly found 1,759 bags of suspected fentanyl, 40 grams of cocaine, 22 grams of crack cocaine, 12 oxycodone pills and over $2,100, according to police.

Police said Middleton is on parole for several narcotics convictions and was remanded into custody. He faces charges of operating a drug factory, tampering with evidence, interfering with police, reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, possession with intent to sell, tinted glass requirements and violating a traffic control signal.

Minchenko, who posted a $10,000 bond, was charged with operating a drug factory, tampering with evidence, interfering with police and sale of a narcotic substance.
