New urban park planned in Watford City

WATFORD CITY, ND (KXNET) — Part of what makes a city thrive is its community spaces. People need a place to get together, a place where they can celebrate joyous occasions and hold events to help each other out. A new urban park intended to do just that is coming to Watford City.

The park will be on Main Street, hoping to create a vibrant community gathering space.

The idea for this park comes from a Community Survey and Downtown Redevelopment Plan which was done in the fall of 2024. The survey, which received more than 800 responses, identified the community’s desire to have an urban park in the downtown area, specifically on N Main St.

The City and its Roughrider Fund committee moved to acquire the necessary properties in late 2024. The Roughrider Fund is a 1.5-cent city sales tax established in 1998, which is used for projects related to community and economic development, such as this. The committee has allocated up to $1.5 million from the fund to buy seven Main Street lots, including the four they intend to use for the park and three others for mixed-use development.

Minot voters narrowly reject park district’s sales tax proposal

The park is estimated to cost between $2.5 and $3.5 million, and will include a stage, sound system, public art displays, and concessions. It will be located between Door 204 and The Choice Building.

To help fund the park’s construction, a community-driven capital campaign will launch in 2026, with construction anticipated to go from 2027-28 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for June 2029.
