Hyderabad: The spirit of Diwali has completely taken over Hyderabad. A day before the festival of lights, with Sunday being a holiday, the city’s old and new bazaars and shopping centres were bustling with hectic activity.

Heavy rush was witnessed at sweet shops, gifting outlets, flower markets, jewelry stores, malls and wholesale cracker stores. From Sunday morning onwards, families took up extensive cleaning-up activities in homes, apartments and even in commercial establishments.

For past two days, almost all the commercial establishments, individual houses, apartments and offices in nooks and corners of Hyderabad have been lit up by colourful lights, welcoming the festive spirit of Diwali.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Diwali, with young children and adolescents set to participate in lighting firecrackers, the eye specialists from Hyderabad-based L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) have urged safety.

“A few precautions alongside the excitement of lights, firecrackers, and family gatherings, will ensure that our celebrations remain joyful and safe for everyone,” says Dr Navya Cherukuri, in charge (Emergency Services) at LVPEI’s Kallam Anji Reddy campus, Hyderabad.

Diwali don’ts:

  • Avoid putting pressure on injured eye, as this could worsen the injury
  • Refrain from touching or rubbing the injured eye
  • Take a doctor’s guidance before using creams/home remedies on eye
  • Avoid removing foreign objects lodged in your eyes on your own
  • Purchase firecrackers from authorised sellers and dry them properly
  • Children must be supervised while they light firecrackers
  • Utilise long-distance sticks/sparklers to light firecrackers
  • Keep two buckets of water nearby to douse any burns
  • For severe burns, wrap the victim in a clean bedsheet and rush to hospital
