A Nation in Crisis: The Unprecedented Descent of Political Decorum

The level of insanity and squandermania displayed by the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) in the run-up to the general elections has reached depths never before witnessed in the political history of Saint Lucia. This behavior comes at a time when thousands of Saint Lucians are struggling under the burden of skyrocketing grocery prices, mounting medical bills, and an ever-increasing cost of living.

How, then, can political parties remain at peace with themselves amid such dire conditions? The key question remains: why impose an unnecessary 2.5% levy while allowing petrol prices to remain at an all-time high during a period of national hardship?

Where, one might ask, has this sudden wave of political generosity originated? Reports from within the party suggest that an advance of approximately $100 million from the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP) was transferred to the current administration. Allegedly, individuals across the country — “every Tom, Dick, and Harry” — are being handed between $300 and $500 indiscriminately, with no accountability or oversight.

Does our Prime Minister, who also serves as Minister of Finance, truly grasp the chaos he is unleashing by permitting such reckless behavior? This is the same Prime Minister who seemingly disbanded the K-9 Unit under the pretext of cost-cutting, a decision that left the nation vulnerable to an unprecedented influx of illegal guns and drugs within an eighteen-month period.

Moreover, this is the same leader who, upon taking office, expunged the records of 150 law offenders — a move that sent the wrong signal to those engaged in criminal activity. Today, he has gone further, allowing the alleged indiscriminate use of public funds to finance political gatherings.

Mr. Prime Minister, the nation is watching — and there are serious questions that demand answers.
