Greece proposes regional cooperation initiative with four East Med countries

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has proposed a regional cooperation initiative involving Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey and Libya during his foreign policy address in Parliament.

According to diplomatic sources, the initiative seeks to address shared challenges resulting from major geopolitical shifts in the region and beyond.

The proposal envisions the establishment of a multilateral “5×5” framework, bringing together five countries to discuss five key areas of cooperation.

The participating nations, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey and Libya, would discuss migration, marine environment protection, connectivity, maritime zone delimitation and civil protection.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs will examine the feasibility and potential of this framework and evaluate whether it could develop into a permanent regional mechanism, the sources added.
