Maseru — By late Friday afternoon, tension and urgency filled the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as Acting DPP Mofilikoane signed two high-profile prosecution directives that could shake Lesotho’s law enforcement establishment. Sources inside the DPP’s office told Lesotho Tribunethat both files were treated as “priority and confidential,” with staff working overtime to finalise the documents before close of business.
The first case involves the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO), which is taking legal action against Commissioner of Police Borotho Matsoso for the alleged embezzlement of police informers’ funds. Investigators claim the money, estimated between M60,000 and M100,000, was diverted for personal use. The case is scheduled to be heard early next week, marking an extraordinary moment where the country’s top police official faces corruption charges.
The second case is no less explosive. The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) has filed charges against Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Paseka Mokete for trafficking in illicit drugs. The case is also set to be heard next week, a move that insiders say will test the police service’s ability to hold its own leadership accountable.
If both cases proceed, they will mark a defining moment in Lesotho’s fight against internal corruption and abuse of power within the security sector. It is rare for two senior police officers to face criminal prosecution at the same time.
Lesotho Tribune understands that court dates are being finalised and that both cases will be heard in Maseru early next week.
This is a developing story. More on this in our Sunday publication, including exclusive details from inside the DPP’s office and reactions from senior police sources.
