I was my father’s caretaker for many years, experiencing firsthand how difficult it is for American patients to meet the ever-increasing cost of their prescription drugs. The emotional drain of worrying about my father’s medication costs robbed us of peace in his final years.
It’s frustrating to know it didn’t have to be that way. To prevent this situation from happening to others, Congress must reform the Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) who control our insurance industry and put profits over patients by deliberately driving up medication costs to line their own pockets.
The House has recently introduced the PBM Reform Act to terminate the link between PBM profits and consumer drug costs. However, instead of prioritizing this act, some in the government want to do Most Favored Nation (MFN), which is President Trump’s plan to impose foreign price controls on the U.S. drug industry.
MFN will cause chaos in our prescription drug supply chain, leading to medication shortages and driving prices higher. Medical needs don’t stop simply because someone can no longer access their medication. MFN price controls could force patients into life-threatening situations where they can’t access their drugs.
Congress must ignore MFN and focus on preventing Pharmacy Benefit Managers from doing even more damage to patients’ health and peace of mind. Sick people and their families are depending on it.
