WAHIAWA, Hawaii (KHON2) — It’s been one year since Oahu’s own Shige’s Saimin Stand in Wahiawa was voted the best burger in the entire United States.
It was quite the buzz last October when Shige’s was nominated out of the blue.
In honor of this anniversary, KHON2.com decided to go check out Shige’s to find out if their burgers are still the best and what customers think of this amazing feat.
When we arrived, like last year, there was a long line to get into to eat. But this time, we noticed there were actually two lines.
One was for those who wanted to eat inside where they can experience the atmosphere of a 35 year old saimin diner. The other was for those who wanted to order to go.
“We found out about this place a few months ago and decided it had to be on our Hawaii list of must dos,” said Claire who was visiting from New Jersey. She and her boyfriend were waiting in line to access the full experience. They had a little while to wait but didn’t mind.
Another person we talked to was Kimo. He was in the takeout line and knew exactly what he wanted. “Fried saimin and their mix plate,” he said with a huge grin. “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. I love it. But I had no idea they make the best burger. They are good though.”
We ordered the regular cheeseburger and the teri burger. And we must say it definitely lived up to the hype. Great texture, amazing flavor and perfect balance of sweetness and savoriness.
So, while you’re looking for something to do this weekend, take trek to Wahiawa and experience the best burger you’ll probably ever have.
