Dollar General Market to open in Hurricane

HURRICANE, W.Va. (WOWK) — The city of Hurricane is the soon-to-be home of a new grocery spot in Putnam County.

Construction is officially underway on a site off Main Street, where a new Dollar General Market will sit.

Located beside Whitt’s Farm Supply, the site was recently sold to a development company that decided to bring the up-and-coming chain into town.

Dollar General Market, also known as DG Market, is an extension of Dollar General that provides communities with fresh produce and the typical convenience items found inside them.

The nearby Teays Valley location opened up earlier this year and has seen a lot of success, according to Hurricane mayor Scott Edwards.

He hopes the new location will reap the same results while serving a different side of town.

“It’s going to be super convenient for them,” Edwards said. “Those folks that live there will be able to run right over, grab what they need on a daily basis, maybe. I know they do that at the one in 304 at Valley Point on Teays Valley Road; they walk over to DG market, walk to Wendy’s, go grab a coffee. It’s so convenient for those folks, and they love it.”

Between the new housing development Woodworth Farms and the Culloden interstate exit coming, Edwards says Hurricane is seeing a lot of fresh economic growth, and the proximity of the new store will arguably be the best part of the deal.

“How convenient is this? Those 400-some houses, folks that live right out here- all around here in Hurricane- they’ll just run over,” he said.

There is no current word on an exact opening date, but Edwards says he expects the store to be ready for customers in early 2026.
