Pago Pago, American Samoa – Fifteen-year-old Australian pilot Byron Waller is scheduled to land in American Samoa around 10 p.m. tonight, marking another key milestone in his flight around the world. By tomorrow morning, he will celebrate his 16th birthday on Samoan soil before departing for Fiji at 10 a.m.
Byron is flying a Sling TSi light aircraft (VH-ZMD) on a journey that has taken him across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. His goal is to become the youngest supported pilot to circumnavigate the globe, completing each leg himself under the supervision of a mentor for safety.
From Patient to Pilot
Byron, from Brisbane, Australia, has titled his mission “From Patient to Pilot.” He lives with Crohn’s disease and uses his flights to raise awareness and inspire resilience in young people. Last year, he completed a three-week, 11,000 km circumnavigation of Australia in a small aircraft, bringing attention to children’s health causes.
This year’s global flight extends that message, combining aviation skill with personal advocacy. Upon returning home, Byron plans to apply for his recreational pilot licence and continue using his story to encourage others to overcome obstacles.
Pacific Stop with Historical Resonance
American Samoa’s role as a Pacific aviation hub gives Byron’s arrival special meaning. His touchdown connects his youth-driven journey with the region’s longstanding air routes and pioneering history. He has expressed interest in returning to the Pacific after his trip to share his experiences with local communities.
Birthday and Community Welcome
Byron turns 16 tomorrow, a symbolic milestone for a young aviator. Local media, community groups, aviation enthusiasts, students, and the public are encouraged to join in welcoming him. Before his departure on 13 October, Byron is keen to meet local youth and share his story through informal talks, photos, and Q&A sessions.
“Flying is my way of showing that setbacks don’t define us — they refine us,” Byron said as he neared American Samoa. “To land here, with its deep connection to Pacific air routes and aviation pioneers, is humbling and meaningful.”
