Search for man reported to have a knife prompts temporary school lockdowns in Columbus

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Schools in Columbus were in a temporary lockdown Wednesday after police say they were searching for a man reported to have a knife.

Just after 11 a.m., officers with the Columbus Police Department were sent to the area of 25th Avenue and 16th Street.

According to police, it was reported that a man armed with a knife was making threats.

“When the subject fled the scene, we immediately initiated a search of the surrounding area,” Interim Police Chief Bret Strecker said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we requested schools in the vicinity to go into lockdown to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

Police said the suspect was “quickly found” and arrested without further incident.

The suspect was lodged in the Platte County Detention Center.

Lockdowns were lifted once it was determined there was no active threat, according to police.

“It was handled very cleanly and professionally,” Strecker said. “Our officers did an excellent job containing the area, searching for the suspect and making the arrest. Everything was well-run from start to finish.”

Charges are pending as the investigation continues, according to Strecker.

No injuries were reported.
