CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — A new data reporting system for firefighters will soon be in a fire station near you.
West Virginia State Fire Marshal Ken Tyree made the announcement to the Joint Committee on Volunteer Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services during Tuesday’s interim meeting at the capitol. The new system is called the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS).
“This system will be an all-hazard system,” Tyree said to the committee. “You’ll be able to look at and see everything that fire departments respond to in a clearer, more precise and more efficient way.”
Tyree said the system is specifically made for firefighters and will streamline fire data collection.
Tyree told the committee that the over 400 volunteer fire departments around the state will adopt the technology by the end of November.
NERIS will replace the national fire incident reporting system (NFIRS), which has been used by firefighters since 1975.
