Popular specialty grocer Trader Joe’s has been granted a building permit for construction on its Lafayette store.

The specialty grocer was approved by Lafayette Consolidated Government for the store planned for the corner of Camellia Boulevard and Bluebird Avenue.

The project is valued at $6.5 million.

The company has still not bought the land at 1710 Camellia Blvd. but is expected to do so soon, a source close to the deal indicated.

It’s the latest on the popular grocer, which opened a New Orleans store Thursday along Tulane Avenue as part of 21 openings across 13 states. It’s known for its low prices, organic and specialty items, its wine and cheese selections and quirky culture.

It will build next door to the site of a planned beer garden after the Lafayette City Council granted the applicant a conditional use permit and rezoned the property. The applicant, BE Holdings, got the OK from the city zoning commission in June on the condition it cannot have outdoor music, documents show.

Both properties are owned by an LLC registered to the Saloom family, records show.

Also along Camellia Boulevard, an unnamed bank is seeking to open at the corner of Verot School Road in front of Rouses Market, LCG records show.
