GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — An 81-year-old woman has died after she was struck by a truck while crossing a road outside a shopping center on Sunday morning, the Greenfield Police Department said Monday morning.
A 2018 Dodge Ram 2500 truck hit Geraldine Johnson, of Greenfield, just after 10 a.m. Sunday while she was crossing in the 1600 block of Melody Lane. That’s in a commercial area with businesses and stores including Bealls clothing store, Dollar Tree department store, and the Tractor Supply Co. farm store. It’s off State Road 9 just a couple of blocks south of the I-70 interchange.
Investigators think Johnson was crossing Melody Lane from the parking lot in front of Bealls clothing store when she the northbound truck hit her. Paramedics from Greenfield Fire Territory treated Johnson before she was flown to an Indianapolis hospital, where she died.
The truck drive, Heath Mitchell, 45, of Alabama, remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Indiana law required him to submit drug and alcohol testing, although drugs or alcohol were not suspected to be a factor. Toxicology results were pending.
The Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team investigated the crash with assistance from several agencies.
