Several streets in Dakar-Plateau renamed

During its solemn session on September 13, 2025, the municipal council of Dakar-Plateau unanimously decided to rename several streets in the municipality, in tribute to prominent figures in Senegalese history and identity.

Among the changes made:
• Jules Ferry Street is now Serigne Mountakha Mbacké Street.
• Ferdinand Foch Street is renamed Jean Alfred Diallo Street.
• Joseph Joffre Street is now Ibra Binta Gueye Mbengue Street.
• Félix Faure Street is now Serigne Babacar Mansour Sy Street.
• Albert Calmette Street is renamed Ousmane Tanor Dieng Street.
• François Henry Laperrine Street becomes Momar Ngom Street.
• Sadi Carnot Street is now Imam Matar Sylla Street.
• Jean Jaurès Avenue is now Thierno Seydou Nourou Tall Avenue.
• Liberation Boulevard is renamed Abdoulaye Wade Boulevard.

According to Mayor Alioune Ndoye, these new names aim to “root our urban spaces in the recognition of our heroes and role models”, turning each street into a symbol of memory and national cohesion.

This initiative is part of a desire to valorize Senegalese history and bring residents closer to their cultural and historical heritage, while paying tribute to figures who have left a mark on the country’s society and politics.
